Daniel Donovan has practiced law out of Great Falls for over 30 years. Formerly a State public defender as well as a Federal public defender, he has been back in private practice since 2000 with his focus on criminal defense. Donovan is a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers as well as of the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In his early years of practice, he was known as "boy defender" but was recently introduced as the "godfather" of criminal defense in Montana. Inspired by such greats as Earl Rogers, Charles Garry, Perry Mason and Atticus Finch, Donovan’s current role model is Horace Rumpole (or is it Denny Crane?). In 1996 and 1997, he successfully briefed and argued a case before the United States Supreme Court, Old Chief v. United States. Donovan was awarded the Charles F. (Timer) Moses Award by the Montana State Bar in 1997 in recognition of his outstanding and committed service in the practice of criminal defense law in Montana. His more recent noteworthy cases include In re Kenneth R. Olson, Contemnor-Appellant, 202 Fed.Appx. 210 (9th Cir. 2006) and United States v. John A. Lence, 466 F.3d 721 (9th Cir. 2006). Donovan presently serves as a member of Montana Public Defender Commission and is President of the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
